Plant Identification Signs
Plant identification signs were installed in May of 2004.
They are commercial grade aluminum on 18" stakes. The plant species were selected by our Landscape Architect, Nancy Takahashi, to represent indigenous plants of our area which grow along the James River.
To the right you see 'Heritage' River Birch, Betula nigra 'Heritage'.
Some adjustments were necessary due to the large scale of some of the trees along the James River, for example, Sycamores. In lieu of this species, Bloodgood Sycamore, Platanus x acerifolia 'Bloodgood' were chosen due to their smaller mature size.
In all, eleven different plant species are found in Canal Basin Square. Next time you visit, see if you can identify all eleven!
We have had a number of request for the source of these signs.
The vendor was Nameplate & Panel Technology at www.myplantlabel.com.
Another company which offers similiar signs is http://www.plantsigns.com.
